Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster, an iconic attraction at Warner Bros. Movie World, has recently made headlines with its closure for refurbishment. Let's delve into the history of this beloved ride, its previous rethemes, and what's in store for its future.

A Brief History

Opened on June 17, 2002, Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster quickly became a fan favorite, captivating riders with its unique blend of dark ride elements and thrilling coaster maneuvers. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations, including a

significant overhaul in 2018, when it was rebranded as Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation.

Previous Rethemes

The ride's previous rethemes have tried to 'keep it fresh' and exciting for guests. In 2018, the introduction of new theming elements and special effects breathed new life into the attraction, attempting to enhance the overall guest experience.
The retheme, dubbed Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster: Next Generation, received mixed reviews from park guests. Critics expressed disappointment with the changes, particularly the decision to make the track visible during the wild mouse portion through the use of lasers and lighting effects. Additionally, the introduction of screens in place of physical props, which were removed as part of the overhaul, was met with criticism.
These alterations altered the ride experience and diminished the immersive quality that fans had come to expect from the classic Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster.

What's Happening Now

Warner Bros. Movie World has shared on their Maintenance Blog the following changes are confirmed to come to the ride.

  • Track upgrades for a smoother ride experience, including the implementation of magnetic brakes.
  • Replacement of outdated ride components with modern designs, ensuring improved reliability.
  • Installation of new ride vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art harnesses for enhanced comfort.
  • Introduction of a tester seat at the attraction entrance to accommodate guests.

Additionally, the park has confirmed that the ride will return to its original theme, complete with audio animatronics — a decision that has delighted fans and us eagerly awaiting the restoration of the classic Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster experience.

Side Note: It's important to clarify that while we're analysing the upgrades and improvements announced by the park for the Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster, our analysis does not imply an endorsement or condemnation of the park's ideas. We are fully supportive of the park's efforts to enhance the ride experience and ensure guest safety. Our aim is to provide an objective evaluation of the announced changes, highlighting both potential benefits and any possible drawbacks.

Ride UpgradePositivesNegatives
Upgrades to the track for a smoother ride experienceUpgrading the track can lead to a smoother and more comfortable ride for guests. Smooth tracks reduce jolts and bumps, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the coaster experience.-
New ride operating system for more reliable operationA new operating system can improve the reliability and efficiency of the ride, reducing downtime due to technical issues. It can also enhance safety features, ensuring a smoother and more secure ride experience for guests.Implementing a new operating system may require staff training, a prolonged "technical rehearsal" phase, and adjustment periods, which could temporarily affect ride operations. Additionally, there may be initial bugs or glitches that need to be addressed, similar to the extended technical issues experienced with the Wild West Falls ride.
New ride vehicles with state-of-the-art harnesses for a more comfortable ride experienceNew ride vehicles with advanced harnesses can enhance safety and comfort for riders, marking the first time a Mack Wild Mouse Model will receive such upgrades. While the exact design of the new trains remains unknown, upgraded harnesses hold the potential to offer improved restraint and support. This could result in a reduced risk of injury and an overall enhanced rider experience.Concerns have been reaised about the aesthetics of the new vehicles and how they fit within the theme of the ride.
Tester seat at the attraction entranceThe addition of a tester seat allows guests to check if they meet the ride's height and safety requirements before queuing up. This helps prevent disappointment for guests who may not be able to ride due to safety restrictions. While the tester seat offers significant benefits, such as ensuring guest safety and providing reassurance, it may inadvertently lead to longer wait times at the entrance, particularly during peak periods. Additionally, managing the flow of guests around the tester seat area could pose logistical challenges. There's also the risk that the seat may be misused for photo opportunities, diverting it from its intended purpose and potentially inconveniencing guests who genuinely need to utilise it.
Theming improvements for guest experienceEnhancing theming can create a more immersive and engaging experience for guests, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the ride. Well-executed theming can transport riders into the story world of Scooby-Doo, increasing their enjoyment and satisfaction.Themed improvements require careful planning and execution to maintain consistency with the ride's storyline and aesthetic. There may be challenges in integrating new theming elements seamlessly without disrupting the existing experience.

Our Thoughts

We remain skeptical about the extent of the overhaul and how it will impact the ride experience. Past experiences with large ride overhauls, such as Wild West Falls, have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in ride capacity, raising concerns about potential operational issues. For instance, Wild West Falls saw its capacity decrease from approximately 1440 riders per hour to just 600 riders per hour after its overhaul.

Furthermore, the lack of transparency regarding the work being carried out on the ride adds to our skepticism. A recent post from Movie World confirmed that they had only just begun the process with the ride manufacturer, leaving us uncertain about the scope and timeline of the refurbishment.

Furthermore, the extended closure of the ride, announced abruptly in January 2023 with plans for reopening in 2025, has stirred unease among park guests and enthusiasts. The lack of adequate explanation or forewarning has left many feeling disappointed and questioning the park's decision-making process.

Construction Updates

Given that the ride is entirely enclosed, behing housed in a sound stage, the construction timeline remains shrouded in mystery. From external observations, it appears that minimal progress has been made, limited to the removal of the trains and animatronics, as depicted in the Coaster Studios Video. Speculation abounds regarding the current state of the ride, with some suggesting that it might serve as temporary storage for ride vehicles and theming elements intended for the Wizard of Oz Precinct, considering its proximity to the construction site. However, without official updates from the park, the exact status and timeline of the refurbishment remain uncertain.

As we all eagerly anticipate the ride's reopening, the transformation of Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster promises to usher in a new era of excitement and adventure at Warner Bros. Movie World. Stay tuned for further updates as we await the return of this beloved attraction.
